Laser focused on Kona in 2016 … watch out!!
I sat down with Michael Raelert this morning on Bang Tao beach after the Thanyapura open water swim and we talked about his current triathlon training camp, fitness and goals for 2016.
Michael has been training and staying at Thanyapura since Feb 1st (7 weeks) and just extended again as in his own words he’s “getting the best base training and quality early season work done than he’s ever had in his career.” There’s no sign of the injury problems which have previously plagued him, and he’s able to consistently get big mileage done with quality training partners who help him keep it real day in, day out.
He brought with him fellow Germans Andi Dreitz the uber cyclist and David Breuer, but also here were Ruedi Wild (2x Challenge Laguna Phuket Winner), Fredrik Croneborg (top pro based in Asia), and a slew of others (see photo below courtesy of https://www.instagram.com/andi_dreitz).
Michael is laser-focused on Kona as his A race for 2016. He’s recognized that his past failures in long distance come from his lack of patience and wanting to always hit the gas pedal, which he can so easily do in half distance events but isn’t sustainable in an 8-hour race.
With a super strong base and a more mature approach to the longer distance, along with the confident yet relaxed attitude of a seasoned veteran, don’t be surprised to see Michael win his first full distance IRONMAN event this year and be in contention along with his brother for the win in Kona come October.
It will be very exciting seeing him race. The key will be for him to stay patient as he’s got speed and power to burn and will be very tough to hold back.
I’ve known and watched Michael train/race for the last 10 years and this is the best version of him I’ve ever seen both physically and mentally.
